Body Skin Care Plan for Winter

I love winter. You have to be trying really hard to manage to look dowdy in winter. The catch with all those clothes is that they dry out your skin, thank you friction. I know, I positively itch after 10 hours of being encased in stockings and long sleeve t-shirts. Sadly, the clothes are not the only culprit when it comes to dry twitchy skin. With that in mind, I’ve created a list of things that make a Sahara out of our skin and the small changes that will keep your skin hydrated and nourished through the dry coldness of winter.

  • Nothing feels more indulgent than a bubble bath at the end of long day, y’all know. However, in winter a warm bubble bath usually is not warm, but rather hot because our bodies need heat. It is that heat that does away with our natural body oil and in the process we also get dehydrated through perspiration, which at times you do not notice if your skin is already wet. Long hot bubble baths are my major weakness and in an attempt to do better, I’ve learned to practice restraint by keeping my bath water warm and only adding more hot water once my body has adjusted to my warm bath. The good old elbow is still the best tester when it comes to water temperature. The hand is not.
  • Coloured scented soaps look and smell so pretty, but bad in the long run, so they have all been relegated to hand-washing duties. My gentler soaps that are without colour or fragrance I have enriched them with essential oils beneficial to the skin. I think I will keep this habit even when spring blooms.
  • I like using toners with alcohol, my face and neck just does not feel quite clean until after I use them. However, in winter my cheeks rebel against such astringent toners, they get tight and extremely dry. So, I go “multi-toning” mode by adding an alcohol free/ milder toner for my cheeks and use my usual one on my oily t-zone.
  • Summer moisturisers are no match to winter weather, thus loading up on serums and hydrating masks is a must. They are more effective and far-reaching than your normal moisturiser. Squeeze in a quality serum between toning and moisturising, you will feel and see the difference.
  • While on the potent skin products, look out for Shea Butter products such lip balms, body scrubs and body butters. They will keep your skin soft and hydrated while they protect it from the elements.

Let me shut up before I bore you, but before I go, have you made any changes in your skin care routine for the winter? If you did, please do share.

Love and air-kisses,
Meka-O
